Kiaora, welcome to Sherwood School

Vision – “Passion for Learning in a Rural Environment”

Sherwood School is located three kilometres along Makaretu Road which turns off State Highway 50 about eight kilometres from where it meets State Highway 2. The school is tucked in at the base of the Ruahine Ranges which create a stunning backdrop, it is the most beautifully situated school in Central Hawkes Bay! Students at Sherwood recognise the highest point of the Ruahine Ranges, Tiraha as their maunga/mountain and the local stream, Tukipo as their awa.

Sherwood School was opened in 1963, hence it has been providing a wonderfully rich education for Year 1 Year 8 students living in the Ashley Clinton and Makaretu districts for over 50 years. We currently have two classes; Mrs White teaches the Years 1-3 in Room 2 and Mrs Kuklinski and myself share the teaching of the Years 4-8 in Room 1. Our small class sizes means we have a fantastic pupil to teacher ratio.

All students and staff at Sherwood School enjoy the friendly, nurturing, family-like atmosphere. Students are proud of who they are and where they come from. With many students living rurally, country values are a strong feature of Sherwood School, respect for self, each other and property are modelled and expected.

The school is supported by enthusiastic and willing community members, not only the families of students but members of the wider community also. We get tremendous support from a huge group of people for annual fundraising events like our Trail Bike Ride.

A’Deane’s Bush is on our doorstep (.8 of a kilometre along the road) and students and staff at Sherwood School are privileged to be able to use it as a wonderful context for learning. We have an A’Deane’s learning focus each year and students from both classes visit twice a term.

Sherwood School is an Enviroschool, we aim to create a healthy, happy, peaceful and sustainable environment by learning and working together. A student-led Enviro group make decisions about, and plan and implement actions at school to help us achieve this aim.

Please give me a call if you would like more information about Sherwood School, or, better still pay us a visit and see for yourself what we have to offer.

Kind Regards
Christine Morrison, Principal
